BOOK VIDEO: SEW A ZIPPERED THROW PILLOW

Sewing in a Straight Line by Brett Bara – How to Sew the Easiest Zippered Throw Pillow from Rarebit Productions on Vimeo.

I’m super excited to finally share my little set of web videos I’ve been working on with the good people at Rarebit Productions! We set out to make a series of mini episodes that would teach viewers how to sew projects from the book while also giving a peek at some of the other projects from the book. We had a lot of fun making them (check out a behind-the-scenes here) and I hope you have fun watching them!

This video features my friend Christina and I making a zippered throw pillow. It gives a quickie lesson on installing zippers using my favorite method, which I think is insanely easy. (I actually think it’s faster to make a pillow with a zipper than to make one without and have to sew the opening closed by hand.) You really can make a pillow cover in about 15 minutes using this method, once you get the hang of it. I hope you try it out!

Big thanks to Rarebit for all they did (which was a lot) to make these vids, and to Molly White for creating the lovely music.

A very, very special thank you to our wonderful sponsor Coats & Clark for making these videos possible! Thanks, Coats!

I love the project, but wondering where I can purchase the fabric in the sewing demonstration. I love the Asian print.

Wow, way easier than making all those silly button holes in the backs of my pillows. I’m going to go home and recover my body pillow now to match the new bedding. THANKS so much for the “zip” of confidence (pun intended but not sure if it worked too well).

That zipper technique! OMG!! Why haven’t I seen that before??? That really was too easy. I will commence sewing zippered pillow slips and zippered pouches and bags. Yippee!!!!

that zipper trick is pure genius. i’ve been wanting to make throw pillows for my bedroom [and really REALLY hate hand-stitching them closed] so this was *perfect*!! thanks so much!

I have sewn many zippers, but this is the easiest and fastest way. Thank you so much. I love you show and will buy your book, even though I am a seasoned seamstress. Please keep on hosting.

My hubby bought me a sewing machine for my birthday and it has been sitting in its box. Having discovered your book on Etsy, I’m inspired to hit up the bookstore and Fabricland on the weekend and get sewing. I don’t think I’ve touched a sewing machine in 15 years, but I’m excited to now that I’ve seen the projects. Beautiful work!

Brett:

I couldn’t tell if you book was only in paperback. I’ve gone online to purchase it and on Amazon.com it only offered Kindle and paperback.

I used to sew years ago when I was young but have forgotten much of it. I saw an article in our Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper last week describing your book and I’m so excited!

Brett,
Your book just arrived at my door yesterday! Can’t wait to cover my livingroom pillows. But I’m thinking french seams…your thoughts? Do you think I should add a seam allowance? Is that even possible on the zipper edge?
